Sudan detains a former member of the governing council for the second time

Omar al-political Bashir's and financial network was dismantled by Mohamed al-Faki, a member of the Sovereign Council who was in charge of the operation.

Officials in Sudan have detained a former civilian member of the governing Sovereign Council, according to members of his party, the latest in a series of detentions after a military coup in the country in December.

Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman, a member of the Unionist Alliance political party, was detained by security agents while driving back to his house in Khartoum on Sunday, according to a statement released by the party.

It is the second time he has been detained since a military takeover led by army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on October 25, an incident that has the potential to undermine the delicate political transition to full civilian administration in the country.

As a result of the October coup, Faki was removed from his job and originally detained before being freed.

Two members of al-party, Faki's who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told AFP that al-Faki was transported to a "unknown place" this time.

In response to a request for comment on the newest arrest, the public prosecutor's office did not respond.

In separate incidents on Wednesday, officials apprehended former Minister Khaled Omar Youssef as well as Wagdi Saleh, spokesperson of Sudan's major civilian opposition group, the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC).

All three men were members of Sudan's governing council, which was in charge of the nation after the removal of longstanding leader Omar al-Bashir in a power-sharing agreement between civilians and the military that was signed in 2019.

A verbal battle with military authorities had erupted between the trio and the military prior to the military takeover in October. A task team formed to destroy Bashir's political and financial network was also comprised of these individuals.

Despite the fact that authorities have accused the committee of misappropriating monies that it has seized, its members have continuously disputed these allegations.

The detention of Youssef and Saleh happened only one day after they accompanied a group from the FFC to meet with UN Special Representative Volker Perthes as part of attempts to address the escalating situation, which were begun last month.

The arrests of Faki and Saleh were criticized by the diplomatic missions of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway in Sudan.

The coup in October was the latest in a series of military takeovers in Sudan since the country's independence in 1956, and it was met with considerable international criticism and punitive actions.

Since then, authorities have clamped down on frequent anti-coup demonstrations, resulting in at least 79 deaths and hundreds of injuries, according to medical officials.

More than a hundred individuals have been taken into custody, including politicians, activists, and journalists.
